Sailen Routray is a researcher, writer, translator (between Odia and English) and editor. Currently, as the Team Leader of School Social Science Initiative (SSSI), Sailen is responsible for programme design and strategic planning. He also handles Partnerships and Advocacy. Sailen also serves as the Director and Managing Trustee of Centre for Human Sciences Bhubaneswar (CHSB), the organisation where SSSI is housed. His previous appointments include working as ‘Visiting Faculty’ and ‘Senior Lecturer’ at Azim Premji University (APU), Bangalore, and as a ‘Research Assistant’, and ‘Research Associate’ at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.
Before joining APU, Sailen Routray was a doctoral fellow at National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore. He has a PhD degree in Development Studies from University of Mysore, Mysore, an MSW degree from TISS, Bombay, and a B.A. degree with English Literature honours from B.J.B. College, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.
His interests lie in the areas of social science education, anthropology of development and public policy, sociology of India, contemporary history of Odisha, and sociology of literature. He has published two edited volumes in English: the first one was titled River water sharing: transboundary conflict and cooperation in India and was published by Routledge India in 2010; and the second one was titled Sharing blue gold: locating water conflicts in India and was published by NIAS in 2015. He is also the co-editor of the collected Odia essays of socialist leader and thinker Kisan Patnaik. Apart from this, he has three other books (of translations into Odia) to his credit, including the alternative education classic ‘Deschooling Society’ by Ivan Illich. He contributes regularly to academic and non-academic journals in English and Odia. He is currently under negotiation with a publisher for his first monograph in English, which is tentatively titled, Government in the backyard : state-fabrication in a watershed project in India, and builds on his doctoral dissertation.
