Context
Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting Group (WCCLG) and Wipro Infotech Ltd (WI) have a presence in Mysore. The chosen villages in Mysore houses around 70% of schedule caste and 30% of (Other Backward Caste’) OBC’s. A very small percentage of families own land and dwelling of their own, the vast majority does coolie work as construction workers and agricultural laborers. Around 50% of the families earn below Rs. 10000 per annum (BPL). Sanitation is a major concern in the area which results in a constant slew of diseases. The nearest PHC is located 3 km away from the villages. Transport facilities are non-existent, people have to either walk or find their own mode of commute.
Partner
Our partner for this project is ActionAid and Rural Literacy and Health Programme (RLHP). ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency working in over 50 countries, taking sides with poor people to end poverty and injustice together. RLHP is a voluntary non-governmental organization, registered in 1984, under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960, and under the Foreign Contribution and Regulation Act (FCRA). The organization is situated in Mysore, Karnataka. RLHP has its major focus on community based health, literacy, children’s rights, specifically children on the street and child laborers, community development, empowerment of women, youth and promotion of grassroots democracy in urban slums and rural areas of Mysore, Chamarajanagar and Mandya districts of Karnataka State.
