Parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh were affected by unprecedented floods in 2009. The floods affected the most backward regions of these states. In line with our focus on working on rehabilitation of those affected by disasters, we decided to work in this area.
Our work
The Karnataka Government took a proactive step to get the corporates involved in the reconstruction of the affected villages. Like in our earlier engagements in the tsunami and kosi flood affected areas, here too we met the affected communities to understand their needs. Our intention was to work to fulfill these needs, one such identified area was housing.
The entire north Karnataka is underdeveloped; it is among the most backward regions of the state. The main vocation here is agriculture. Due to continuous drought, there have been no crops and the community is impoverished. There is a need for many developmental activities, including proper housing, drainage and sanitation facilities.
Based on our survey at the field level and our consultation with the government two villages belonging to two different districts were selected to build the houses. These villages were Hosura pai doddi in Surapur taluk of Yadgir district and Naregal of Koppal District. 111 houses have been built in Hosura Paidoddi where as in Naregal a total of 428 houses have been constructed.
